All New Website!

Posted in Roseblade Artwork, Roseblade Commissions, Roseblade Wedding Work, Roseblade Work on May 25th, 2010 by admin

The all new Roseblade.com. Yes it looks almost exactly the same as the last one! We’ve been working on it for quite a few months now, making the whole thing database driven from this blog to the wedding clients and right through to the latest content automatically populating the home page footer. It’s now really easy for wedding clients to view and add images to their basket and preview their orders.

So do browse, and let us know if there are any bugs. Thanks so much.

Keeping it Real

Posted in General Knowledge, Roseblade Wedding Work, Roseblade Work on May 17th, 2010 by admin

As a wedding photographer it’s easy to want to try and better your services each time, and so you should. The trouble comes when you find yourself thinking up more and more outlandish ideas, stupid poses or over the top editing. If the wedding itself is crazy, that’s just a gift and you lap up the couple’s innovation and creativity.

It’s a tough balance. Yes be creative, yes push the boat out a bit, yes try new ideas. But it’s not all about your portfolio, your marketing material or your blog. At a wedding it’s mostly about capturing moments, expressions and interactions that the couple will treasure. A genuine hug, laugh or tear is worth a thousand faux model poses, jumps in the air or waves at the camera.

Innovate but keep it real.

GLENNZ Tees

I know it’s not photographic, and I don’t want the blog to be totally random but I looooove T-shirts. I did a stint of designing and selling my own some time ago. This guy is brilliant. Loads and loads of top class designs. Some really clever ideas. Check it out.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 – Painting

Posted in Artwork, General Knowledge, Roseblade Artwork, Roseblade Work, Technology on May 13th, 2010 by admin

I’ve been looking forward to the release of CS5 for some time now. One of the new features I wanted to try out was the new painting engine in Photoshop. This new tool allows you to easily blend colour like never before. This ‘painting’ was created from a photo and done in about half an hour. It’s so easy, download a trial of CS5 and have a go.

I’m not entirely sure what commercial use this tool has for me just yet. For me Painting (a hobby) and Photography (a living) have never really blended together that well. I love both, and I love creating ‘visual art’ in my photography but with so many digital tools at once fingertips these days it’s so easy to ruin a perfectly good photo with filters and airbrushing.

For now I’ll enjoy making art in Photoshop in my spare time but keep the brush well away from the photo paper for now.

In Your Area

Posted in London, Roseblade Commissions, Roseblade Work on May 11th, 2010 by admin

This image is from a photo campaign for Tearfund UK. There is so much going on in your area, you just have to turn over a few rocks. In lining up all these separate shoots I discovered a teenagers steel pan band, an adult homeless shelter, a kids capoiera class, a furniture store giving away to the needy, and so much more. All this was within a couple of miles of my office and I met some really interesting people in the process. See some more of the images here

The Streets Where We Live

I’ve thought for a long time how surprisingly random the streets of Harlesden become. In our neighbourhood we have a fairly consistent stream of interesting adornments to our pavements. I have friends who have periodically salvaged perfectly good chairs, tables and all sorts from the kerbside!

After a couple of years of walking past installations such as televisions, saucepans, plenty of mattresses and the odd fridge, I realized they weren’t going away any time soon.

While I patiently wait for a local clamp down on fly tipping I decided I’d start to catalogue the array of unwanted possessions.

This is of course a work in progress. Maybe in a few months I’ll have enough to present. Thing is, who knows what tomorrow will bring? I can’t see the collection ever being truly complete.
